The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has launched the Global Alliance for Human Rights, a broad coalition aimed at putting human rights at the center of decision-making amid record levels of global conflict, rising inequality, and accelerating climate change. The initiative was unveiled in Geneva by UN High Commissioner Volker Türk, who described the world as "in disarray" and emphasized that human rights are intrinsic to people everywhere.

The Alliance seeks to unite a diverse range of participants, including governments, civil society, businesses, cities, faith leaders, artists, academics, and young people. It is based on three principles: imagine, dialogue, and act, aiming to foster collaboration across sectors.

According to the Alliance's concept note, the human rights system is under unprecedented strain, with many violations unpunished, shrinking civic space, some States withdrawing from multilateral commitments, and critical underfunding threatening the overall ecosystem.

Planned initiatives include a Global Helpdesk on Business and Human Rights, a RightsX Summit focused on digital innovation, and a Human Rights in Every Classroom program intended to integrate human rights education at all levels of schooling. The Alliance aims to grow the network of "human rights cities" from 104 to 1,000 worldwide.

Türk highlighted the importance of giving victims of human rights abuses, including those affected by conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and Haiti, a voice. He also addressed the influence of large technology companies, urging that human rights should guide and regulate their financial and political power.

The Alliance is planned as a long-term effort, not a temporary campaign, with a three-year milestone aligned with the 80th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 2028. To monitor and set priorities, a Global Alliance Human Rights Forum will be convened annually on this date. Geneva was chosen as the initiative’s center due to its many human rights institutions, though the Alliance aims to have a presence wherever human rights are defended.
