The Royal Memorial Van Damme, named for the late Belgian middle-distance athlete Ivo Van Damme, is marking its 50th edition with a campaign film featuring a computer-generated image of Van Damme entering King Baudouin Stadium. The video depicts the virtual Van Damme nodding at footage of Sebastian Coe, who set the first world record at the inaugural 1977 meeting, held to honor Van Damme. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe will be among notable attendees at the King Baudouin Stadium for this event, which also serves as the 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final on September 4 and 5.
Van Damme died in a car crash in December 1976 near Marseille at age 22, just months after winning silver in the 800m and 1500m behind Alberto Juantorena and John Walker, respectively, at the Montreal Olympics. His potential was widely recognized, with Walker reportedly stating Van Damme could become the greatest mile record holder due to his exceptional speed. At Montreal, Van Damme finished second in the 800m with a time of 1:43.9, close behind Juantorena's 1:43.5.
The Memorial Van Damme event, officially given the Royal title by King Philippe of Belgium for its 50th anniversary, began as a tribute by Belgian sports journalists after Van Damme's untimely death. The first meeting took place at Heysel Stadium in August 1977, attracting 40,000 spectators and featuring stars from the Montreal Olympics. Initially planned as the Van Damme Classic, the event was organized by journalist Wilfried Meert and colleagues after Van Damme's passing.
