The women’s 200m event at the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest features a highly competitive lineup led by Olympic champion Gabby Thomas (USA) and world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (USA), who clocked the fastest time this year at 21.69 seconds during the US title meet in New York.
Thomas, Olympic gold medalist in Paris and world silver medalist in Budapest in 2023, aims for a new title in the event, which will close the championship’s three-evening programme. She posted times of 21.70 seconds in June and 21.83 seconds in Budapest, where the event takes place.
Jefferson-Wooden and Thomas lead a strong US squad, with five Americans ranked among the world’s top seven: Anavia Battle, Kayla White, and Cambrea Sturgis join them. White won the Lausanne Diamond League and placed second in the Diamond League Final; Battle and Sturgis also earned high placements at the Brussels meet.
Great Britain’s Amy Hunt, a world silver medalist and four-time European champion this season, is another notable contender. Hunt is entered for both the 100m and 200m, having finished second in the 100m and third in the 200m at the Diamond League Final.
The 200m final is set for Sunday, 13 September, with additional competitors including Shaunae Miller-Uibo (BAH), Fabienne Hoenke (SUI), Ashanti Moore (JAM), Torrie Lewis (AUS), and others, promising a high-caliber contest to crown the Ultimate Champion.
The event preview notes the world record of 21.34 seconds, held by Florence Griffith Joyner (USA) since 1988. The world leader this year is Julien Alfred (LCA), who will focus on the 100m race.
