The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship (SHS), a collaboration between World Aquatics and the Hungarian Government since 2021, enables international students to study and train in Hungary at leading swimming facilities and universities. Josefina Arrua of Paraguay earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, while Ammara Pinto from Malawi and Saud Ghali from Bahrain graduated in Physical Training at the Hungarian University of Sports Science.
Each athlete was motivated by the opportunity to pursue academic achievement and advanced swimming simultaneously. Pinto was driven by the chance to combine education with access to world-class training. Ghali noted the program supports both rigorous education and athletic careers. Arrua appreciated the program’s quality and the opportunity to train with international coaches and athletes.
Arrua described challenges adapting to a new continent, language, and culture: “When I arrived in Hungary, it was my first time in Europe, and the change was overwhelming.” Nevertheless, she expressed eagerness to embrace the new lifestyle.
All three graduates highlighted personal growth beyond sports. Pinto said she became more responsible managing studies, training, and independent living. Ghali explained the experience improved his discipline and adaptability, helping him balance multiple commitments and embrace diverse cultures. Arrua summarized her transformation, stating she became a different person due to changes in language, culture, weather, transportation, food, and social circles.
These reflections suggest the SHS program provides an environment that fosters both athletic and academic development, as well as personal growth, for international students.
