The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has delivered a next-generation Global Burst Detector (GBD) payload designed to detect nuclear detonations under all conditions, according to Matthew Napoli, NNSA’s Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation. He emphasized this capability is critical for maintaining strong nuclear deterrence and future monitoring needs. Once launched, the payload will join existing satellites to extend detection capabilities into the future.
The GBD sensors are developed through a partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), supported by mission assurance from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and The Aerospace Corporation. SNL designs and manufactures the optical sensors and the sensor management subsystem, while LANL provides sensors for electromagnetic pulse, X-ray, and charged-particle detection. LLNL and The Aerospace Corporation independently verify models and simulations to ensure system accuracy and performance.
The payload undergoes a comprehensive process of engineering, technology development, manufacturing, review, and testing to certify it for spaceflight. After completion, it is delivered to the U.S. Space Force’s GPS spacecraft contractor for integration and eventual launch.
