The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the Geothermal Energy from Oil and Gas Demonstrated Engineering (GEODE) initiative, making up to $165 million available to support geothermal energy expansion by leveraging oil and gas sector expertise. The program seeks to use the industry’s knowledge, technology, and skills to address barriers in geothermal deployment.

GEODE aims to advance geothermal energy by applying oil and gas technologies and experience to overcome challenges in the geothermal sector. According to the DOE, this cross-sector collaboration may enhance geothermal deployment and support commercial viability.

A key component of the initiative is the Wells of Opportunity (WOO) program, focused on demonstrating the commercial potential of geothermal energy production from existing hydrocarbon wells.

The DOE also emphasizes the importance of maintaining abundant, affordable, and reliable energy resources to ensure domestic and global energy security.
