At the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26, USA’s Tate Taylor won the men’s 100m with a time of 9.94 seconds, making him the joint fifth-fastest U20 sprinter in history. He edged out Jamaica’s Gary Card, who ran 10.05 seconds for silver, while South Africa’s Marko Ferreira took bronze in 10.16 seconds. Taylor is the first US athlete to win the men’s U20 100m title since Noah Lyles in 2016, and he is expected to face Card again in the 200m later in the competition.

In the women’s 100m, Mia Maxwell of the USA took gold with a time of 11.14 seconds, breaking an eight-year Jamaican winning streak. Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas claimed silver, improving on her previous bronze from the 200m, while Italy’s Kelly Doualla won bronze, securing Italy’s first world U20 medal in the women’s 100m. Maxwell’s twin sister Mariah and Xenia Buri finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the women’s heptathlon, Enni Virjonen of Finland won gold with 6214 points, the best U20 title-winning performance since 2018. Virjonen’s win continues Finland’s recent success in the event after Saga Vanninen’s wins in 2021 and 2022. Estonia’s Mia Mireia Uusorg took silver with 5961 points.
