Father Stanley Rother was born in Oklahoma in 1935 and ordained a Roman Catholic priest at age 28. Inspired by Saint Augustine's call to serve others, Rother dedicated his priesthood to missionary work, leaving the United States in 1968 to serve in Guatemala during a time of civil war and oppression.
During his 13 years in Guatemala, Father Rother focused on humanitarian efforts, including translating Scripture and helping establish vital community resources such as a school, hospital, and the region's first Catholic radio station. His commitment placed him on a government hit list, temporarily forcing him to return to Oklahoma. Despite the danger, he returned to Guatemala, emphasizing his duty not to abandon his community.
On July 28, 1981, Father Rother was fatally shot by masked men at his rectory. He was 46 years old. His sacrifice remains a symbol of courage and faith within the Catholic Church and beyond.
In 2017, Father Rother was beatified, becoming the first American-born martyr recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. His legacy lives on, with the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in Oklahoma City serving as a pilgrimage site attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
