Since the Hamas-Israel conflict began in October 2023, at least 220 United Nations agency staff have been killed in Gaza, according to UNRWA Acting Commissioner-General Christian Saunders, who cited ongoing disregard for humanitarian safety and international laws. Recently, six UN staff were killed in a strike on a Gaza school.
Local authorities report 1,334 deaths and 4,429 injuries in Gaza since the 10 October 2025 ceasefire. Military operations, such as airstrikes and shelling, continue, particularly west of the "yellow line" established by Israel as part of the ceasefire agreement.
Ongoing airstrikes and attacks on populated areas have driven casualties, damage, and rising displacement. Nine in ten Gaza residents are now internally displaced, with many repeatedly forced to move, leading to overcrowding, limited shelter, and restricted access to clean water and sanitation. These conditions increase risks of communicable diseases, including respiratory infections, acute watery diarrhoea, and acute jaundice syndrome. Winter preparations at displacement sites are heavily constrained by funding shortages and material entry restrictions.
Delays and denials by Israeli authorities for engine oil and spare parts deliveries threaten the operation of generators essential for water, sanitation, health, and waste management services. The World Health Organization estimates that about one in four people in Gaza requires acute or ongoing care, including for severe injuries such as amputations and burns.
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported multiple recent child casualties in Gaza, including sisters Bana, 6, and Lana, 12, killed with their parents in an airstrike while sleeping in Beit Lahia; 8-year-old Wafaa in Gaza City; a pregnant mother and her unborn baby in Khan Younis; and children Saadi, 3, and Obaida, 9, who died by gunfire in Deir Al Balah and Khan Younis. Another child, Hilal, 14, was injured in an airstrike and later died from his wounds. Three other children also died from previous injuries.
