UNICEF is using AI technology to convert textbooks into interactive formats tailored for children with learning difficulties, addressing a key barrier for nearly 240 million children with disabilities worldwide. The Accessible Digital Textbooks for All (ADT) initiative, supported by advocacy groups, currently operates in 17 countries and aims to reach 50 by 2030, having recently added six new countries this year, according to UNICEF's Global Director of Education and Adolescent Development, Pia Rebello Britto.
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) uses AI in its Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) to analyze data from 30 satellites, identifying methane emissions 12 to 15 times faster than humans. Since its launch in 2024, the system has issued 7,500 alerts and triggered 42 mitigation actions, preventing emissions equal to those from 24 million gas-powered cars, according to UNEP Climate Change Division Director Martin Krause.
AI-enabled methane detection supports both environmental and economic goals, as companies often act quickly to resolve leaks and prevent product loss. Given methane's potency as a greenhouse gas, this work contributes to slowing global warming and reducing smog linked to respiratory issues.
