The World Aquatics Masters Championships have featured water polo competitions for athletes aged 75 and above, with participation growing in recent editions to more than 75 athletes. Efforts are now underway to introduce an 80+ water polo category for the 2027 championships.
Australian and North American groups are leading the proposal, seeking to involve countries with strong water polo traditions such as Japan, Germany, Hungary, and Great Britain. The Perth Cockatoos and USA Blue Thunder have regularly competed in older age divisions since 2010, with the Cockatoos winning gold in the inaugural 70+ category in 2017. They plan to field a team in the 80+ division in 2027.
Bill Wallace, a competitor from Perth in multiple age groups, stated that several players are already committed to the 80+ category, but more men and women—regardless of elite athletic background—are welcome. Enthusiasm, commitment, and team spirit are considered most important. Eligible players must be 80 or older by December 31, 2027, with the championships scheduled for July 11–17, 2027.
USA’s Bob Likins mentioned continued discussions with potential 80+ players, noting the event will emphasize enjoyment over competition. Health professionals have highlighted the importance of ongoing exercise for good health at older ages.
Nadine Day, chair of the World Aquatics Masters Committee, emphasized the significance of teams in the 75+ category, calling the 75+ group at the Singapore event historic for featuring three teams. Organizers welcome all interested to join as individuals or teams.
