At 19, Australian athlete Izobelle Louison-Roe has established herself among the top young high jumpers globally. After claiming silver at the World U20 Championships in Lima two years ago, she returns to the global stage in Oregon with greater experience and confidence. She expressed pride in representing Australia internationally, describing the opportunity as “absolutely incredible” and the “best feeling ever.” Louison-Roe enters the competition as the world U20 leader, having cleared a personal best of 1.95m twice this season—first in Canberra and then in Melbourne. In addition to her high jump success, she equalled the national U20 triple jump record with 13.36m and secured the senior high jump title at the Oceania Championships earlier this year.
Since her silver in Lima, Louison-Roe notes she has gained a stronger understanding of championship events through further high-profile competitions. She acknowledged that competing as world U20 leader brings higher expectations, but she focuses on her own performance instead of external pressures. Her progress is supported by her mother, Karen Roe, a former jumper who became her coach after an injury. Louison-Roe highlighted that this athlete-coach relationship has strengthened their bond and provided important lessons in determination, building a high level of trust in her mother’s methods.
Louison-Roe advanced to the high jump final at Hayward Field by clearing 1.79m in qualifications. She remarked on the differences competing in Oregon compared to Lima, such as the unique event setup facing the audience, but said she was unfazed during qualification. She expressed excitement about preparing for the final.
