The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported over 1,644 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Ninety-four people have been hospitalized, with no deaths reported to date.
The illnesses have been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in these states. Investigations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) traced the contaminated lettuce to a single supplier in Mexico used by the affected Taco Bell outlets. Shredded iceberg lettuce sold in grocery stores or served at other restaurants is not associated with this outbreak.
The CDC advises consumers not to eat shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell locations in the listed states. Individuals experiencing symptoms of cyclosporiasis, such as watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, and weight loss, are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider and request testing for Cyclospora. Symptoms typically start about one week after exposure and can last from a few days to a month or longer without treatment. Staying well hydrated is important for those affected.
