Italy’s Larissa Iapichino was crowned women’s long jump champion at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, securing first place with an opening jump of 6.90m (0.6m/s) and earning the top prize of US$150,000.
With world champion Tara Davis-Woodhall absent due to a recent car accident, Iapichino’s victory came ahead of Britain’s Jazmin Sawyers, who jumped 6.78m, and USA’s Alyssa Jones, who achieved 6.77m.
The competition’s revised format allowed only the top six athletes a third attempt and the top four a fourth attempt, impacting competitors like USA’s Monae’ Nichols, the Diamond League champion, who was eliminated after two rounds.
Iapichino led from her first jump, followed by a 6.76m effort, before fouling her last two attempts. Sawyers recorded her best jump in the final round, while Jones achieved her top mark in the opening round, despite taking off further behind the board than Iapichino.
Other top finishers included France’s Hilary Kpatcha in fourth (6.73m) and USA’s Claire Bryant in fifth (6.52m).
Iapichino commented on adding a new title to her career, enjoying the competition’s atmosphere and the pink sand surface. Sawyers praised the stadium and called it a 'wow moment,' expressing some disappointment but overall satisfaction with her season.
