Gary Card made headlines at the Jamaican Championships by running a national U20 record of 9.93 seconds in the 100m, making him joint third on the global U20 all-time list. At 19, Card is preparing for the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26, scheduled for August 5-9.
Card's sprinting talent emerged early. He won the U10 boys’ sprint double for Ardenne Prep at age nine and stood out at the 2017 National Prep School Championships. After moving to Wolmer’s Boys’ high school in Kingston, Jamaica, Card had to earn his spot on the track team despite his earlier successes.
His perseverance paid off. In 2022, he claimed silver in the U17 boys’ 100m at the CARIFTA Games in Kingston. In 2023, following a false start at the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships, he captured 100m silver at the NACAC U18 Championships in Costa Rica.
Card competes in both the 100m and 200m events, racing seniors in the 200m during the Jamaican Championships to improve his performance. In 2023, he won the 100m in 10.07 and placed fifth in the 200m with a personal best of 20.50 seconds.
At the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, Card navigated unfamiliar conditions, including cold weather that required extra warm-up. He finished sixth in the 100m and helped Jamaica secure gold in the 4x100m relay. These experiences continue to support his development.
