Ja'Kobe Tharp of the USA enters the men's 110m hurdles as the world record holder with a time of 12.75 seconds, set in Eugene. The 20-year-old set this mark during the NCAA Championships, surpassing Aries Merritt's 2012 record. Tharp has remained in top form, consistently running under 13 seconds this season, including 12.85 seconds at a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Budapest, the Ultimate Championship venue. He also claimed his first Diamond League title in Brussels with a time of 13.03 seconds.
Jamal Britt, also from the USA, is a strong contender with five Diamond League victories this year. He recorded a season best of 12.86 seconds, ranking fifth on the world all-time list at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene. Britt has broken 13 seconds several times and was runner-up to Tharp in the Diamond League Final.
Cordell Tinch, the 2025 World Athletics Ultimate Champion and Diamond League titleholder, qualified for Budapest by winning the world championships in Tokyo. The 26-year-old also won the Doha Diamond League and the US Championships, posting a season's best of 13.00 seconds.
Other expected competitors include Trey Cunningham, the 2022 world silver medalist and recent world indoor bronze medalist, with a personal best of 12.98 seconds and a Diamond League win in Rome. Jamaican athletes Orlando Bennett and Tyler Mason, silver and bronze medalists behind Tinch at the world championships, are also contenders.
The semifinals and final are scheduled for 11 September in Budapest, with the semifinals at 20:21 and the final at 21:49.
