At the Broken Arrow Skyrace in Palisades Tahoe, California, Anna Gibson and Philemon Ombogo Kiriago set new course records while winning the ascent and 23km events, part of the WMRA Mountain Running World Cup.
In the 5.8km ascent race with 865 metres of vertical gain, Gibson overtook early leader Joyce Muthoni Njeru in the final section to win by eight seconds, cutting two minutes off the previous course record. The men’s ascent race was won by Kenya’s Patrick Kipngeno, who surpassed early leader Kiriago and held a narrow lead to finish just ahead of Cameron Smith and Kiriago, with about 10 seconds separating each.
Philemon Ombogo Kiriago delivered a standout performance in the 23km race, finishing in 1:42:59 and breaking the prior course record of 1:43:53 set in 2025. In the women’s 23km race, Romania’s Florea won with a time of 2:02:18, among the fastest finishes in event history.
Hot conditions, with temperatures around 30°C, challenged athletes as they navigated tough climbs and technical descents. In the women’s 23km, Florea and Kenya’s Muthoni Njeru raced closely uphill, but Florea pulled ahead on the descent and maintained the lead after the climb to High Camp. Lauren Gregory and others competed for podium and top-10 spots.
