World Aquatics has appointed Ranomi Kromowidjojo as its first Athlete Engagement Director, a new role designed to lead athlete-facing services within the organization. Kromowidjojo will oversee the development and management of athlete support systems and collaborate with the Development and Sport Departments, reporting directly to Executive Director Brent Nowicki.
Kromowidjojo, one of the most successful sprint freestylers in aquatic sport history, won 17 medals at the World Aquatics Championships and claimed both the Women's 50m and 100m Freestyle golds at the London 2012 Olympics, among three Olympic gold medals. Since retiring in 2022, she has remained involved in the sport, most recently serving as a World Aquatics ambassador at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
World Aquatics President Husain Al Musallam emphasized Kromowidjojo's experience as an elite athlete and the importance of athlete engagement for the organization. Al Musallam stated that her appointment reflects World Aquatics' commitment to supporting athletes throughout their careers and beyond. Kromowidjojo expressed honor in taking on the role and highlighted the importance of ensuring athletes feel genuinely supported at every stage of their journey.
The Athlete Engagement Director role is part of World Aquatics' broader commitment to enhancing direct engagement with athletes and keeping their experience central to the organization's mission. Kromowidjojo will begin her duties on October 1.
