World Athletics President Sebastian Coe highlighted that the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26, held at Hayward Field, are more than a competition, serving as a key development pathway for young athletes. Coe noted that the event fosters personal growth and positive messages about sport alongside performance achievements. He also recognized the essential role of coaches in athlete development.

Development initiatives such as Athletes Connect offer workshops and talks from sporting legends, providing dedicated spaces for athlete engagement. The World Athletics Media Academy continues its partnership with Sony, where University of Oregon students receive mentorship in editorial and photography while assisting with event coverage.

The championships mark the 40th anniversary since their inception in Athens in 1986. Oregon is hosting for the second time, following the 2014 edition, with the location known for its strong association with track and field. Coe expressed gratitude to the local organizing committee, USATF, the city of Eugene, and the University of Oregon for their efforts in staging the event.

USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel expressed pride in hosting a third world championship event in the United States over the past four years, including the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon and January’s World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, alongside the U20 competition.
