Sherrine Barrows, 28, originally from Mahalapye and raised in Gaborone, has progressed from volunteering at sporting events to becoming a technical official in athletics. She was selected as one of the national technical officials at the Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26, working as an assistant to the starter—a moment she described as one of the biggest of her life.

Barrows works full-time as an occupational health and safety officer at a construction company in Ghanzi and took time off to participate in the World Relays. She received strong support from her colleagues and employer, making the experience memorable.

Her involvement in athletics started with the Sport Volunteer Movement in Botswana, where she volunteered at many local sports events. Her interest in athletics grew after volunteering at the Botswana National Athletics Championships. Initially, her role was to carry start lists between officials before walkie-talkies were used.

Mentoring was crucial in Barrows’ development. Experienced officials, especially race starter Philander Villander, provided guidance and teaching that boosted her confidence and knowledge. Encouragement from Botswana Athletics Association Competition Director Thomas Ndadziila motivated her to pursue formal training, leading to her national technical official certificate.
