Somali referee Omar Artan has been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, scheduled for 12 August in Salzburg between UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA Europa League winners Aston Villa, following cooperation between UEFA and the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF).
Despite his young age, Artan is recognized as one of the world’s top referees and has been on the FIFA international list since 2018. He officiated the second leg of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League final and received the CAF Men’s Referee of the Year Award 2025 in recognition of his performances.
Although included on FIFA’s match officials list for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Artan was unable to participate due to entry restrictions for the United States.
His appointment to the UEFA Super Cup follows a Memorandum of Understanding recently signed between UEFA and CAF, aimed at enhancing collaboration in refereeing and promoting the values of unity, equality, and non-discrimination in football.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin described Artan as an excellent and experienced young referee who has proven himself at the highest level in CAF competitions. CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised Artan’s world-class refereeing and international respect, and expressed gratitude for his involvement in the UEFA Super Cup, which showcases football's unifying power across Africa, Europe, and worldwide.
