At the Junior Diving World Championships in Rijeka, Croatia, Matvei Pomoshnikov of Russia secured the boys’ 1m springboard title by outscoring Germany’s Finn Awe in the final two dives. Awe had held an early lead, carrying points from the preliminaries, but a mistake on his fourth dive allowed Pomoshnikov to move ahead by 4.80 points. Pomoshnikov then posted the highest-scoring final dive with 76.80 points, sealing the gold by an 11.20-point margin over Awe.
Awe took home the silver medal, expressing disappointment in his performance, particularly the reverse 2½ dive during preliminaries, despite focusing on his coach’s advice. His silver completed a set of gold, silver, and bronze medals at this competition.
Canadian 18-year-old Arnaud Corbeil captured the bronze medal decisively, finishing 14.40 points behind Awe and nearly 30 points ahead of fourth place. Corbeil said he knew he was performing well, even though he did not closely follow the scoreboard.
Pomoshnikov’s gold added to his two silvers and a bronze from earlier events, marking a successful championship.
