Three global gold medallists and several Hungarian athletes have received exceptional invitations to compete at the upcoming World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary. Notably, Great Britain’s 2023 world champion Josh Kerr and Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the 2021 Olympic champion, have both been confirmed for the men’s 1500m final through these invitations.
Kerr expressed eagerness to compete at the championship, emphasizing his commitment to racing against the world’s best. Ingebrigtsen, who already qualified for the 5000m event as reigning Olympic champion, will take part in both the 1500m and 5000m disciplines. The two athletes have had a longstanding rivalry on and off the track.
The men’s 1500m field will expand to 13 competitors to accommodate Kerr and Ingebrigtsen. This decision was made by the championship’s steering board, who felt excluding either athlete would not represent a complete field. Prize money of US$5000 will be awarded to the 13th place finisher, consistent with other events.
Additionally, world and Olympic gold medallist Gianmarco Tamberi has received an exceptional invitation for the men’s high jump. Tamberi recently secured his fourth European Championships title, clearing 2.32m in Birmingham. He expressed enthusiasm for competing in Budapest, recalling past successes at the venue.
Several individual Hungarian athletes and relay teams have also received exceptional invitations, further representing the host nation.
