The World Athletics Council has announced Nairobi and Munich as the host cities for the 2029 and 2031 World Athletics Championships, respectively, during their 242nd meeting in Budapest.
This will mark the first time the Championships are held in Africa, with Nairobi hosting the event in 2029. The 2031 edition will take place in Munich's Olympic Stadium, marking a return to Germany.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described the bidding process as highly competitive, with all four candidate cities demonstrating strong ambition and commitment. The decision supports the mission to grow athletics globally, with upcoming editions scheduled for Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Nairobi has gained extensive experience hosting major athletics competitions, such as the 2017 World U18 Championships and the 2021 World U20 Championships. The city also hosts the Kip Keino Classic, a major one-day meeting on the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold since 2020. These events have established Nairobi's credentials as a host city, following an earlier bid for the 2025 Championships.
According to the statement, both Nairobi and Munich present distinct opportunities to stage world-class athletics events, strengthening the sport's global appeal.
