Elaine Thompson-Herah Secures Historic Sprint Double at Commonwealth Games

Elaine Thompson-Herah, a five-time Olympic gold medallist and the world's fastest woman entering the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, had not won an individual Commonwealth medal prior to this event. Previously, she earned relay gold from Glasgow 2014, relay silver from Gold Coast 2018, and finished fourth in the 200m in 2018, missing a medal by just 0.01 seconds.

At Birmingham 2022, Thompson-Herah claimed the women's 100m gold with a time of 10.95 seconds, taking a decisive lead from 40 metres and finishing ahead of Saint Lucia's Julien Alfred (11.01) and England's Daryll Neita (11.07).

Three days later, Thompson-Herah added the 200m title at Alexander Stadium, completing a sprint double last achieved by Debbie Ferguson in 2002. This marked her first individual Commonwealth Games gold and placed her among a select group of women to win both 100m and 200m titles at a single Commonwealth Games.
