Italy’s Francesco Fortunato and Mexico’s Alegna González triumphed in the 10km races at the Gran Premio Internacional Madrid Marcha, the sixth Gold leg of the World Athletics Race Walking Tour, held in Madrid on a hot Sunday morning. Both athletes earned their second victories at this event, with Fortunato reclaiming the title he first won in 2023, and González defending her 2025 crown.
The women's race started at a comfortable pace, with a 4:29 opening kilometre. Peru’s Evelyn Inga and China’s Baima Zhuoma took the early lead, increasing the pace to 4:16, while González, Spain’s Aldara Meilán, and France’s Pauline Stey stayed close behind. Stey fell out of podium contention before halfway, followed by Baima, as González surged ahead. By 6.7km, it was a duel between González and Inga. González accelerated in the eighth lap, covering it in 4:16, then maintained a 4:20 pace in the final laps to finish in 44:03, ahead of Inga’s 44:16. Meilán was about 30 seconds behind for a strong debut in Madrid.
González noted feeling tired after a busy competition schedule and credited coach Ignacio Zamudio’s advice to attack in the closing laps. She plans to train in Chihuahua ahead of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.
The men's race began at a moderate pace due to temperatures around 28°C. The first kilometre was completed in 4:05 by a large group led by Japan's Kazuki Takahashi and Keisuke Hara. Takahashi set most of the early pace.
