At the Asian U20 Championships at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground in Hong Kong, India’s 19-year-old high jumper Pooja won gold and set new records. She surpassed Svetlana Radzivil’s 20-year-old championship record by clearing 1.91m, then set an Indian senior record by clearing 1.93m without knocking the bar. She also attempted to break the Asian U20 record of 1.96m but was unsuccessful. Pooja, from a farming family in Haryana, has previously won the Asian U18 Championships in Tashkent and other youth medals. She aims to target the Asian U20 record again at the Commonwealth and Asian Games this year.
Korea’s Park Si-hoon won shot put gold and broke the 15-year-old Asian U20 record with a throw of 20.65m, surpassing Li Meng’s previous mark of 20.63m with the 6kg shot. Park, 19, has won several medals in throwing and plans to compete in the Asian U23 Championships with goals of reaching 21 metres.
In sprinting, Suleiman Abdulrahman of the United Arab Emirates set a new championship record in the 400m with 44.85 seconds, beating the previous record of 45.53 seconds. He also helped the UAE win mixed 4x400m relay gold with a record 3:18.81. Aminat Kamarudeen of UAE won gold in the 400m and the mixed relay, recording a personal best.
