Emmanuel Wanyonyi enters the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest as the standout contender in the men’s 800m, leading the world this year with a time of 1:41.76 set in Zurich on August 27. Building on his Olympic crown and 2023 world title, he remains the athlete to beat in the semifinals on September 12 and the final on September 13 in Budapest.
Wanyonyi, whose personal best is 1:41.11 from 2024, is eyeing David Rudisha’s 14-year-old world record of 1:40.91 set in August 2012. He also holds the 1000m world record in 2026, further proving his middle-distance strength.
Key challengers include Djamel Sedjati of Algeria, a close second to Wanyonyi in Zurich, and Canada’s Marco Arop, the 2023 world champion in Budapest, who ran 1:41.84 this year. Less than a tenth of a second separates the top three athletes this season, underscoring the event’s competitiveness.
Other notable competitors are Eliott Crestan and Mohamed Attaoui, medalists at the world indoor championships earlier this year. The U.S. fields Brandon Miller and former world champion Donavan Brazier. Britain is represented by Max Burgin and Ben Pattison, while Mark English, the European champion for Ireland, and France’s Yanis Meziane, who clocked a personal best of 1:42.87 at the Diamond League Final, are also in contention.
