The NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs), established by Congress, aim to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals in biomedical and biobehavioral research. The programs address the financial burden of educational and training costs that might otherwise drive scientists to the private sector.
LRPs repay up to $50,000 annually of a researcher's qualified educational debt in exchange for a commitment to NIH mission-relevant research.
There are two LRPs: the Extramural LRP, for researchers outside NIH, and the Intramural LRP, for NIH employees.
NIH announces the availability of LRP funds through notices in the NIH Guide. Application windows vary: for example, Extramural New and Renewal Awards open September 1, 2025, and close December 4, 2025; Intramural Awards open January 2, 2026, and close March 16, 2026. Award start dates and review periods are scheduled accordingly.
Award recipients can manage their applications and renewals through the NIH's award management portal.
