Languages play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage and identity, carrying knowledge, traditions, and experiences across generations. Indigenous Peoples, who make up about 6% of the world’s population, speak more than 4,000 languages worldwide, greatly contributing to global linguistic diversity.

Despite this diversity, many Indigenous languages face challenges in being passed down to future generations. UNESCO is committed to protecting these languages and supports the development of inclusive education systems that value and recognize cultural and linguistic diversity among learners globally.
