UNESCO, in partnership with the Educational and Cultural Coordination of the Central American Integration System (CECC/SICA), has released the "Exploratory Assessment on the Adoption, Impact and Governance of Artificial Intelligence in the Cultural and Creative Industries of the SICA Region." This study provides a regional perspective on AI adoption and its potential effects across the cultural sectors.
The publication assesses how AI tools are integrated within the creative industries of SICA member countries and examines the implications for the creation, production, and distribution of cultural content. It identifies trends, common needs, and concerns raised by stakeholders in these regions.
Key findings highlight the need to enhance technical skills and deliver specialized training. The assessment also stresses the importance of developing governance frameworks to protect creators’ rights and intellectual property in digital contexts. Additionally, the study underscores the value of ethical AI development that supports technological innovation while preserving the diversity of cultural expressions in the region.
This collaboration between UNESCO and CECC/SICA aims to serve as a reference for policymakers, cultural institutions, academic entities, and stakeholders in the creative industries. The study is intended to inform understanding of AI's impact on Central America’s cultural ecosystem and support regional dialogue and strategy on cultural rights, diversity, and sustainable creative sector growth.
