Global champions Jimmy Gressier of France and Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway are set to clash in the men's 5km race at the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 2026, scheduled for 19-20 September in Denmark. Gressier is the current world 10,000m champion, while Ingebrigtsen holds the Olympic 5000m title. This marks their first head-to-head road race encounter.
Gressier, 29, ran a European record of 12:51 in Lille in April, a time bettered only by Berihu Aregawi and Yomif Kejelcha. Ethiopia's Addisu Yihune, second in Lille with 12:54, is also a podium contender.
Since Lille, Gressier placed third in the 10,000m and fourth in the 5000m at the European Championships. Yihune secured Diamond League 5000m wins and competed at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, where he did not finish. Ingebrigtsen, recovering from Achilles surgery, won his fourth consecutive European 5000m title and the Ultimate 5000m title in Budapest. He opted out of the 1500m in Budapest to avoid scheduling conflicts.
If Ingebrigtsen competes in Copenhagen, he returns to a city where he ran his only half marathon of 2024. His only previous 5km road race was in Stavanger in 2020, clocking 13:28.
Other contenders include Maxime Chaumeton, who set a South African record of 13:06 in Lille, Norway’s Narve Gilje Nordås, and Portugal's José Carlos Pinto. The Ethiopian team will feature Mezgebu Sime, while Burundi’s Egide Ntakarutimana also competes after placing second in the Diamond League 5000m final and eighth at the Ultimate Championship.
