James P. Danly was sworn in as Deputy Secretary on June 9, 2025, at the Department of Energy. Before his appointment, he was a partner and led the Energy Regulatory Group at Skadden in Washington, D.C. Danly served at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) as general counsel, commissioner, and chairman. His military service includes two tours in Iraq as an officer in the United States Army, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Danly holds an undergraduate degree from Yale University and a J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School. He also clerked for Judge Danny J. Boggs of the Sixth Circuit.
