The Office of Inspector General (OIG) of the U.S. Department of Energy is responsible for enhancing the integrity, economy, and efficiency of the Department’s programs and operations by detecting and deterring fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement. Key management challenges include the aging nuclear weapons complex infrastructure and emerging human capital issues.
The OIG also supports reforms in Department security by identifying both systemic and situational vulnerabilities, and it conducts annual audits of the Department’s financial statements to ensure fiscal accountability. Recent investigations have addressed cyber crimes affecting the agency’s advanced supercomputing operations. The OIG regularly issues reports recommending improvements in contract management, waste management, environmental and safety practices, research and development, major project construction and operations, and human capital management.
To encourage public engagement, the OIG operates a hotline for reporting fraud, waste, abuse, or mismanagement in Department of Energy programs or operations. Reports can be submitted by DOE employees, contractors, or the public through multiple channels, including phone, fax, email, an online webform, or in person at any of the 15 OIG locations nationwide.
Most OIG reports are publicly available, though some may be withheld in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act, which regulate access based on sensitivity and privacy concerns.
