A recent study reviewed medical records of about 4,800 adults aged 65 and older to assess the use of medications that affect the brain and nervous system for at least 28 days. These medications included drugs prescribed for depression, anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disturbances, and those causing drowsiness.
Among those with dementia, 25% were taking at least one such medication, compared to 17% of those without dementia. Researchers found that many older adults may use these medications without an appropriate medical indication, which can increase risks such as confusion, falls, and hospitalization.
Dr. Annie Yang from Yale University highlighted the importance of collaboration between older patients, their caregivers, and physicians to ensure these medications are appropriate and safe. Reducing unnecessary use could improve care safety for this population.
