The National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer, coordinated by the CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, has enrolled over 40,000 firefighters nationwide. It is now the largest firefighter cohort dedicated to studying occupational cancer risks and prevention.

Firefighters are exposed to hazardous substances such as smoke and toxic chemicals during their duties, which may increase their risk for certain cancers. The NFR gathers detailed work history information and integrates it with state cancer registries to better understand these risks and guide prevention efforts.

Enrollment is open to all U.S. firefighters, including career, volunteer, active, retired, and those with or without a cancer diagnosis, across all specialties. This effort reflects the fire service’s commitment to research and reducing work-related cancer, with each participant aiding efforts to protect firefighter health.
