The European Union has taken significant steps to support Ukraine amid ongoing conflict. The EU approved a €90 billion loan to meet Ukraine’s financial and defense needs over the current and coming year. This aims to cover Ukraine’s key financial requirements during this period.

Additionally, the EU has implemented its 20th package of sanctions to further pressure Russia. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression.

The EU also plans to formally open initial clusters of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, marking progress in Ukraine’s integration with the EU.

These actions were outlined by European Council President António Costa ahead of the informal meeting of EU heads of state or government on 23–24 April 2026.
