Europe is the fastest warming continent, with temperatures rising at twice the global average, according to a joint report by the UN World Meteorological Organization and the Copernicus Climate Change Service. In 2025, at least 95% of Europe saw above-average annual temperatures, including a record three-week heatwave in Scandinavian sub-Arctic regions where temperatures exceeded 30°C near the Arctic Circle. Additionally, 86% of the region experienced strong or worse marine heatwaves, annual sea surface temperatures reached record highs, and wildfires burned over one million hectares — the largest area on record. River flows were below average for 11 months across Europe.
In Lebanon, experts from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) platform warn that one in four people could face acute hunger due to ongoing clashes in the south between Hezbollah militants and Israeli forces. The report indicates about 1.2 million people may encounter high levels of acute food insecurity between now and August, a substantial increase from the 874,000 affected between late 2025 and March. This population includes 725,000 Lebanese residents in “crisis” conditions, more than 460,000 Syrian and Palestinian refugees, and 50,000 new arrivals from Syria since December 2024.
