The International Historical Commission (CHI) supports the preservation and celebration of historic vehicles, recognizing them as a vital part of global motoring heritage that reflects 20th-century social and economic developments. Owners maintain these vehicles with dedication, providing a moving museum for future generations to appreciate.
Recognized by organizations such as UNESCO and the European Union, historic vehicles are considered essential to technical and cultural heritage, deserving focused preservation efforts.
Maintained historic vehicles contribute minimally to overall vehicle emissions and environmental impact. Their ongoing repair and reuse of parts align with circular economy principles.
The CHI advises the FIA on matters related to the non-sporting aspects of historic vehicles, supporting information exchange and legislative monitoring among FIA Member Clubs worldwide. Its structure includes a President, up to 24 titular members elected by the FIA World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism (WCAMT), vice-presidents appointed internally, and co-opted members. Giuseppe Redaelli from ACI Italy currently serves as CHI President and was re-elected through 2025, with Carl F.J.M. Höhner and Jeremy Vaughan as Vice-Presidents. The CHI President chairs all meetings, which involve representatives from the Fédération Internationale de Véhicules Anciens (FIVA).
The CHI also co-chairs the FIA-FIVA Relations Committee alongside FIVA representatives, providing a platform to pool resources and speak with a unified voice on issues concerning historic vehicles. This collaboration led to the ratification of the Turin Charter, establishing a joint FIA-FIVA definition and guidelines for the maintenance and handling of historic vehicles.
