The Irish Schools’ Athletics Association (ISSA) has been recognized with a World Athletics Heritage Plaque in the ‘competition’ category. The plaque was presented on May 29, 2026, at Tullamore Harriers Stadium in Spollanstown, County Offaly, where it will remain on permanent public display. The ceremony included officials such as Pierce O’Callaghan from World Athletics, Brid Golden from Athletics Ireland, and Billy Delaney from Irish Schools Athletics. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe congratulated ISSA on its 110th anniversary and the recognition.

The association’s history dates back to 1916, when the Irish Amateur Athletic Association first promoted national championships for schoolboys. The initial event was scheduled for May 20, 1916, but was postponed due to the rebellion and eventually took place on September 23. Early competitions saw schools like Cork Grammar School, Belvedere College, and Mountjoy School producing champions.

ISSA’s championship structure enables young athletes to compete regionally, nationally, and internationally. It has nurtured notable athletes including Eamonn Coghlan, Sonia O’Sullivan, and Rhasidat Adeleke. Today, the association operates entirely through volunteers, providing essential platforms for cross-country and track and field athletics for aspiring competitors across Ireland.
