Urbanisation accounts for roughly one-third of Africa's per capita GDP growth over the past two decades, highlighting the critical role cities play in economic development. This growth stems from agglomeration economies that boost the productivity of firms and workers.
Urban residents typically earn higher wages, hold more skilled jobs, and work longer hours than rural inhabitants. They also enjoy better access to education, services, and infrastructure.
The benefits of urbanisation extend beyond cities, as proximity to urban centres can enhance the performance of nearby rural areas. The growth of small and mid-sized cities also helps provide infrastructure and services to rural populations.
To maximise these benefits, African governments are urged to invest strategically across cities of all sizes to support both urban and rural communities.
