World Aquatics has begun constructing new swimming pools in four African countries: Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, and Lesotho, with completion expected by October 2026. These projects are part of the Pools for All program, a collaboration with the International Olympic Committee and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa to develop aquatic disciplines and promote water safety across the continent.
Each pool is funded and supplied by World Aquatics, with installation by the supplier Lokang. Responsibility for facility management, staffing, and technical operations lies with the respective Member Federations, National Olympic Committees, and local governments to ensure high standards and community integration.
The Pools for All initiative targets countries lacking aquatic infrastructure, promoting sustainable sport development and addressing drowning, a leading global cause of death. The pools also complement the Discover Water program, which educates youth in water safety and aquatic skills.
In Africa, where access to safe swimming facilities is limited, these new pools aim to support elite swimmer training and serve as community centers for swimming education and participation. Cape Verde has also agreed to join the program, with its contract nearing finalization.
World Aquatics looks forward to celebrating the progress and completion of these pools, marking a significant advancement in aquatic sport and safety infrastructure in the region.
