The Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 marks the first time the global World Athletics Relays competition is held in Africa, with Botswana as host.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe emphasized the historic nature of the event, highlighting Africa’s contribution to athletics over the past 50 years and expressing hope that the competition will inspire young athletes in attendance.

Coe also noted that the event serves as the main qualification competition for relay teams at upcoming World Athletics events in Budapest and Beijing, with around 700 athletes from about 40 countries participating.

Local Organizing Committee Chair Martin Mokgwathi expressed pride in Botswana hosting the World Relays for the first time in Africa, aiming to deliver an outstanding athletics event and encouraging visitors to explore beyond the stadium.

Debswana Diamond Company Corporate Affairs Manager Keamogetse Sampson highlighted the sponsor’s mission to enrich the nation through diamond revenue and to support the significance of this global event.
