Middle-distance races, including the 800 metres, were part of the Ancient Olympic Games and were revived in the mid-19th century. The men’s 800m has featured at every Olympic Games since 1896, while women first competed in 1928. The women’s 800m was removed and then reinstated in 1960.

Athletes from five continents—North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Oceania—have won gold in the men’s 800m at the Olympics, reflecting broad international success. Kenya has been especially dominant in recent years, winning gold in 2008, 2012, and 2016. David Rudisha notably set a world record of 1:40.91 while winning gold at the 2012 London Games.

In the women’s 800m, European athletes held historical dominance. In recent years, African women have claimed Olympic gold in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2016.
