The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced its intent to issue funding opportunities totaling nearly $1 billion to advance and scale mining, processing, and manufacturing technologies across critical minerals and materials supply chains. These initiatives aim to drive innovation in reliable energy technologies, reduce energy costs, and strengthen American leadership, especially in artificial intelligence applications, according to DOE statements.
Earlier initiatives include executive orders signed by President Trump directing the DOE to lead efforts in fostering a nuclear renaissance and enhancing the nation’s innovation standards in science. The DOE also announced measures to increase American coal production and reforms to expedite permitting for construction projects on federal lands managed by the department.
DOE Secretary Chris Wright highlighted collaboration among national laboratories, including work with OpenAI and over 1,000 Energy Department scientists to advance artificial intelligence research aligned with energy goals. The department previously announced funding opportunities for its Energy Frontier Research Centers, which support fundamental energy science research.
