Some of the world’s top young throwers will compete for medals in shot put, discus, hammer throw, and javelin at the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26, scheduled from 5 to 9 August at Hayward Field. The men's shot put event features Omar Hussein, who set a personal best of 20.97m when winning the US U20 title in June and leads a group of five athletes who have thrown beyond 20 metres this year. Among them are Korea’s Park Si-hoon, who holds an Asian U20 record of 20.65m, Greece’s Aristion Anastasios Papadopoulos, and Brazil’s Alessandro Borges, all with bests exceeding 20 metres. Jayden Walcott of Barbados is the youngest competitor in this group at 17, with a national U20 record of 20.19m.
In the women's shot put, Nigeria’s Jessica Oji aims for gold after securing silver at the Commonwealth Games with a 17.87m throw. Oji is the only athlete in this event to break the 18-metre barrier this season, setting an African indoor record of 18.50m. Other notable competitors are Ecuador’s Belsy Jennifer Quiñonez and Belgium’s Nafy Thiam, who have best throws of 17.75m and 17.30m, respectively. Germany’s Emily Scherf and USA’s Jaslene Massey, both with personal bests under 17 metres, will attempt to surpass that mark in Eugene, where Massey previously won national U20 titles in discus and shot put.
Jamaican athlete Joseph Richard Salmon is a strong favorite in the men’s discus, holding the area U20 record with a 67.55m throw achieved in March. Salmon seeks to claim his country's third world U20 discus title. Other contenders include Estonia’s Sten-Erik Iir and Poland’s Jakub Rodziak, who have surpassed 63 metres; Ukraine’s Yaroslav Lystopad; and the USA’s Simon Rosselli, with personal bests around 62-63 metres.
