The 2014 World Athletics U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, marked the first outdoor global World Athletics Series event in the United States. It launched the careers of several athletes who later excelled at the senior level.

British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith captured her first global title in the women's 100 meters, clocking 11.23 seconds. Before the event, she won a 4x100m bronze at the 2013 senior World Championships and later became 200m world champion in Doha 2019. In Oregon 2022, she added a 200m bronze at the senior World Championships.

Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei became the first global champion of the championships, winning the men's 10,000 meters in 28:32.86. He returned to Oregon for the 2022 World Championships, claiming another 10,000m title. Cheptegei is also a two-time Olympic champion and holds world records in the 5000m and 10,000m events.

Australian Matthew Denny competed in both discus and hammer throw, finishing fourth in discus. After his senior World Championships debut in 2019, he placed sixth in discus at Oregon 2022. Denny went on to win an Olympic bronze medal and set the Oceanian record with a throw of 74.78 meters.

American Shamier Little completed a treble of 400m hurdles titles by winning at the U20 Championships, alongside her NCAA and US U20 titles at the same venue. The United States led the medal table with 11 titles, including Little’s hurdles victory.
