The World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26 will feature 496 athletes representing 85 federations plus the World Athletics Athlete Refugee Team, highlighting strong global participation. The competition, set for 19-20 September in the Danish capital, will crown global champions in the road mile, 5km, and half marathon events.
Among the entrants, Agnes Ngetich, the Kenyan half marathon record-holder and second on the world all-time list, looks to add to her world cross-country title won earlier this year. She will compete in the half marathon alongside Ethiopia’s Tsigie Gebreselama, fourth at the previous championships, and Uruguay’s marathon bronze medallist Julia Paternain.
The US team is led by North American record-holder Weini Kelati and features Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat, who qualified through a prior race. Carrie Ellwood and Annie Rodenfels will participate as non-scoring athletes.
On the men's side, Nicholas Kipkorir, ranked fourth all-time in the half marathon, joins the competition with Sweden’s Andreas Almgren, a European record-holder. They will face Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei and Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo, both international medalists.
The 5km event will see France's world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier, who nearly set a world record earlier this year, Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune, and Norway’s Olympic 5000m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, contesting the event after his return from injury and following the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. Notable women in the 5km are Kenya’s Caroline Nyaga, Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw, European record-holder Diane van Es of the Netherlands, and Belgium’s Jana Van Lent.
