World Aquatics has received the highest possible A1 ranking in the ASOIF Governance Review, advancing from Group C in 2019-2020 and A2 earlier in 2024. This achievement follows reforms initiated in 2021 focused on increasing accountability, transparency, and athlete protection across the organisation.
Key reforms include the establishment of an independent Aquatics Integrity Unit, adoption of a new Integrity Code, development of a comprehensive sustainability strategy, significant constitutional changes, improved safeguarding measures, enhanced financial transparency, and ongoing efforts to promote gender equity and athlete representation.
World Aquatics President Husain Al Musallam stated that the rating reflects the organisation’s commitment to building trust in the aquatics community by prioritising effective governance. He emphasised that the A1 ranking is recognition rather than a conclusion, highlighting the need for continued governance improvements through listening, accountability, and constant evaluation.
Miguel Cardenal, Chair of the Supervisory Council for the Aquatics Integrity Unit, highlighted the progress since 2021 and affirmed the Integrity Unit's support in maintaining high standards of integrity, governance, and accountability in aquatic sport worldwide.
