Audrey Werro won the women’s 800m at the European Championships in Birmingham with a championship record time of 1:54.81, surpassing a mark that had stood since 1982. Werro had fallen in her semifinal but was reinstated after an appeal. In the final, she took control early and defeated Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, who led initially but could only narrow Werro’s lead slightly at the finish. Femke Broeders-Bol finished third with a time of 1:55.54, equaling the Dutch record set in 1992.
Karsten Warholm claimed his fourth consecutive European 400m hurdles title with a time of 46.63, breaking his own championship record. Warholm led from early in the race, finishing over a second ahead of silver medalist Emil Agyekum of Germany. This win maintains Warholm’s unbeaten streak at the championships since 2018 and follows his gold in the mixed 4x400m relay at the event.
Gianmarco Tamberi secured his fourth European high jump title by clearing 2.32m, a season best. Tamberi, the Olympic and world champion, had not cleared over 2.23m earlier in the season. In Birmingham, he and Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk both cleared 2.30m before Tamberi’s winning jump.
